This famous photograph was taken in 1966 by the Reverend Ralph Hardy, a retired clergyman from White Rock, British Columbia. Rev. Hardy did not see the ghostly spectre when he took the photograph of the elegant spiral staircase (known as the “Tulip Staircase”) in the Queens House section of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. The photograph only revealed the shrouded figure climbing the stairs upon the film’s development.
Experts who have examined the original negative, including some from Kodak, concluded that it had not been not been tampered with.
This photograph isn’t the only evidence of paranormal activity at the 400 year old Queens House. There are reports of several other apparitions, unexplained figures seen in the vicinity of the staircase, and unexplained footsteps are reportedly heard even today.
Even recently a gallery assistant was talking with 2 collegues when he saw one of the doors to the Bridge Room close by itself, and a woman glide across the balcony and pass through the wall on the west balcony. He said “I couldn’t believe what I saw. I went very cold and the hair on my arms and my neck stood on end. We all dashed through to the Queen’s Presents Room and looked down towards the Queen’s Bedroom. Something passed through the ante-room and out through the wall. Then my colleagues all froze too. The lady was dressed in a white-grey colour crinoline type dress.”
In addition, other reports include the unexplained coral chanting of spectral children, slamming of doors by unseen hands, tourists complaining of having being pinched by unseen fingers, and the ghostly figure of a pale woman frantically mopping blood at the bottom of the Tulip Staircase, where it’s said that some 300 years ago a maid was thrown from the banister, plunging 50 feet to her death.
